Overdue Trade Post- 90's Ripken Goodness

These cards came in a trade from Greg of Lake Effect Baseball Cards. There seem to be a lot of Gregs in the cardblogosphere (myself included), and one of my favorite things may be trading with other Gregs. I'm glad the ones I know (Night Owl, Grogg) all stick with the traditional single "g" at the end, instead of the evil and wicked "double g" Gregg.

I forget now what I sent to Greg, it might have been Heritage short prints, it might have been A&G, but in return I got some modern cards a few weeks back, with the promise of some old school goodness to follow. Well, Greg came through, and sent over some sweet Ripken goodness.

Here are some of my favorites:

1996 Upper Deck SP Cal Ripken. His position listed as SS, as it should be.

1992 Upper Deck Teammates "Iron & Steal" Cal Ripken & Brady Anderson. Totally awesome to see this card again. I had this way back when. It was "the" card to own if you were an O's fan in '92.
1995 Upper Deck Collector's Choice Cal Ripken Playing Card. I've never seen one of these before, but it's pretty cool looking. Reminds me of that early 90's neon & black thing that was all the rage. It also looks like the Disco Era Dandies inserts from Upper Deck Decade 70's.

1994 Fleer All Star Game Cal Ripken. This is the year Baltimore hosted the All-Star game. Awesome, just awesome... and patriotic.

1994 Bowman's Best Cal Ripken and Kevin Oris Who the hell is Kevin Oris, and why is he on a card with the great one? This is the only Bowman's best card I own, and it's pretty cool looking. Sort of looks like the beginning of chrome technology.

Greg, thanks for the great Ripken cards. Believe it or not, I don't have a ton of his cards, and used to think he was overrated when I was kid. In retrospect, I was pretty damn stupid when I was a kid. These are awesome cards, almost all from an era when I was not collecting, so it's extra cool to see them now.

Greg also sent a '91 Upper Deck Mike Mussina Top Prospect card, but I refuse to post photos of, or even discuss that dirty traitor.

  1. It's Kevin Orie. At the time, he was the latest in the long line of can't miss prospects who were going to take over 3rd base. Until they got Aramis in 2003, the Cubs basically had a black hole at that position since Ron Santo left in 1974. Orie actually hit .281 in 1997 and finished second (I think) in the NL ROY race to Scott Rolen. He was terrible in 1998 and wound up getting traded... to Florida I think? Don't remember. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the cards.

  2. After doing some research, he actually tied for 8th in the voting with Neifi Perez. Holy crap... someone actually voted for Neifi Perez to get an award for something other than sucking... that's incredible to me. I got the Marlins part right, though. Yay me.

  3. I had a bunch of Orie RCs in plastic holders... no idea where they are now.
