Wish List Card #5

With Allen & Ginter's already being everywhere this month, I figured what better time than the present to feature an original 1887 as my latest "Wish List Card".

If you happened to have read THIS post, then you already know that I have a special place in my heart for Mr. Cody, and the town he founded, which I visited on a trip to Yellowstone a few years back. For some reason I don't remember seeing a copy of this card in his museum, but since it's technically his rookie card, it certainly seems to belong there.

I only know of a few people who are actually collecting this set (Dayf?) and it appears that even in poor condition these cards still seem to fetch a pretty penny on eBay. I realize this is most likely another of those cards that will permanently, and sadly remain on my wish list, and never actually make it into my collection.

It's a shame really, because this is a beautiful "O.G." A&G card. Not to mention that awesome handlebar mustache & goatee combo that The Buff is rockin'. That look, along with the sideburns that grow into the mustache really need to make a comeback one of these days.

Now THAT'S a Cut Signature!

The new eBay layout doesn't let you steal images like the old one used to, but luckily Joe of The Priceless Pursuit was bored at work and got some screen grabs for me. I'm not positive, but I think this is the first cut signature to be auctioned off from '09 Ginter. Not the greatest of subjects, but I really like how it says "Very truly yours" before the autograph. It makes the whole thing seem so much more polite and personal.

What is this?

Aside from the obvious fact that it's a stack of cards, this is how many doubles, triples, quadruples & quintuples that 4 boxes of Allen & Ginter's got me. I haven't counted, but this has to be somewhere around 500 cards that are essentially useless to me. Topps did a TERRIBLE job with collation, and there's NO WAY you should EVER get this many doubles out of 4 hobby boxes. To make matters worse, I'm nowhere near completing the base set, and may actually have more doubles than cards that go towards completing a set.

Expect a full breakdown of all 4 boxes sometime this week, along with trade & want lists.

My $7 Cut Autograph

You may recall from reading THIS post, that I won an eBay auction for a cut autograph while I was away at the beach. Well.... it arrived yesterday.

There is it, my $7 Bob Feller cut autograph. Unfortunately, it's put out by TriStar, and is from the Signa Cuts set. I say unfortunately for a few reasons. The first is that the back of this card is EXTREMELY vague and there isn't even an attempt at authentication. Here's the exact verbiage from the back of this card:

"You have received a Signa Cut^® featuring an authentic hand-signed autograph"

What exactly does that mean? I could have signed this card, and that verbiage would still ring true.

My second issue with this card is something that should be pretty obvious to all of us. Bob Feller is still alive! This set is actually FULL of players who are still alive. Granted, Bob Feller is 90 some-odd years old at this point, and is widely considered one of the best pitchers of his era, along with being a first ballot Hall of Famer, but the question still remains.... Why are companies releasing cut autographs of players who are not deceased and could otherwise sign a regular card?

My third and final issue with this card I'm not even sure is actually an issue. Originally, I thought the card was pretty bland looking, but to tell you the truth, the more I think about it, the more I like the fact that this is just a plain, white index card instead of a recycled autograph bit from an autographed card that was previously released years ago, ala 2009 Legendary Cuts. Those cards are just plain ugly! TriStar did manage to put some sparkles on the border, so they've got that going for them. I will admit though, it's still a pretty dull looking card overall, and a photo of the actual player would have been a nice addition.

Despite the fact that it MAY be a fake cut autograph of a player who is not deceased that also happens to be sort of boring, I still got a freakin' Bob freakin' Feller cut autograph card for SEVEN FREAKIN' DOLLARS! The freakin' heater from Van Meter, and hurler of 3 no-hitters, including the only one to ever be thrown on Opening Day! That's pretty freakin' awesome!

The Burke Kenny Octo-fecta

As a blogger named beardy, I absolutely LOVE that Topps included 2008 Full Beard & Mustache champion Burke Kenny in this year's Allen & Ginter's set. I love it so much in fact, that I am going to try and attempt to collect EVERY Kenny variation in this year's release. Believe it or not, through 4 boxes of Ginter, I wasn't even lucky enough to pull his base card. So I truly will be starting from scratch. Too bad Topps didn't use a picture like the one above for his card. It would have looked a little better than just a dude with a huge beard in his sweats, and would really showcases what all that facial hair can do.

Even after I decided to post box this as my second and last Gint-A-Cuffs entry, I didn't think it would add up to this many points. Hitting 2 relics that were good for multipliers pretty much made this box what it was, and that's the reason why I chose it (obviously). I find it a little funny that the only box to not include an autograph out of the 4 that I busted is the one that's worth the most points.
